Avocado sales to China are expected to more than double in 2018 as demand continues to grow. The country's expanding middle-class population in particular is quite interested in this fruit.
And the pace of growth shows no sign of slowing; more and more health-conscious consumers in the world's most populous nation are showing an interest in avocados. The fruit also appeals to‘young, trendy people’. Chinese millennials who have travelled overseas are also helping to boost the market. Most of the demand in China is from urban consumers in the largest cities of Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou.
Theedgemarkets.com reports how for countries like Mexico, however, the U.S. remains a priority market. Mexico plans to ship 1.8 billion pounds (815,000 tons) of avocados to the U.S. in the 2017-18 season. By comparison, Latin American countries as a group shipped about 76 million pounds (34,500 tons) of avocados to China last season.
