China: Tainan pineapples find road to mainland blocked
Almost 90% of the Tainan pineapple export is destined for mainland China. In the last half month, Tainan pineapples encountered obstacles on the way to mainland China. The price of pineapples in production areas has dropped to 13 NTD [0.44 USD] per 0.6 kg. That is a price drop of almost half compared to peak prices. Tainan is a major pineapple production area and this is the height of the production season, but with the access to mainland China blocked, the price collapsed.
Pineapple farmer Wu Zongjie stated that this development occurred in the last half month. The main reason was the sudden halt of Tainan pineapple sales in China. The export volume all ended up on the domestic market.
Xu Hanqing, director of Tainan City Bureau of Agriculture, stated that Tainan has more than 1500 hectares of pineapple plantation. Guanmiao District alone counts for 700 hectares. The production volume is more than 75 thousand tons. The price is currently low, because this is the height of the production season. Conditions have not been ideal. The wholesale price in Taipei dropped from 30 NTD [1.01 USD] per 0.6 kg to 22 NTD [0.74 USD]. The surface area devoted to pineapple plantation in Tainan increased by 20% in the last 8 years as a result of growing export trade.
